QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVED THROUGH LASER EYE SURGERY
First Quality of Life Survey Among Laser Eye Surgery Patients Demonstrates High Satisfaction, Improved Daily Routine and Overall Quality of Life

Fairfax, VA– The vast majority of Americans who had their vision corrected by laser surgery are highly satisfied with the results and said that the overall quality of their lives and daily routines has improved, according to the results of a Harris Interactive survey released by The Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC), the public education arm of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).

The survey is the first nationwide quality of life survey assessing life implications for laser eye surgery patients. The survey asked patients to evaluate the impact of their eye surgery on the quality of their family life, careers, and sports. These survey findings, along with the ESEC’s newly updated LASIK screening guidelines, can help interested patients make educated choices by weighing the benefits and risks of laser eye surgery.

Of the approximately 3 million Americans who underwent laser eye surgery since 1995, more than 85 percent said the surgery improved their overall quality of life and 93 percent of patients said they were satisfied with the results. Among the benefits of the procedure, respondents cited improvement in several specific aspects of vision, daily living and everyday activities, including:

· Ability to see upon waking (seeing an alarm clock) (89%)
· Freedom from glasses and contacts (83%)
· Improvement in personal safety (69%)
· Increased confidence in personal appearance (65%)
· Better participation in sports or fitness activities (54%)

Scientists at The Cleveland Clinic have identified the first gene confirmed as a cause of coronary heart disease in humans. Results of this groundbreaking research will appear in the Nov. 28 issue of Science.

The gene, MEF2A, was discovered by methodically studying the genetic makeup of 21 members of an Iowa family plagued for generations by incidents of coronary artery disease and heart attack. (Research with the family has continued beyond preparation of the Science article. Of the more than 50 family members who have provided DNA, the genomes of 26 family members now have been analyzed.)

Unfortunately, most people still tend to believe that 3DUS is only about getting nice and amazing pictures of baby faces, legs or genitalia. It is precisely this belief and lack of information what has driven us to present to you a set of some different and updated applications that have proved to be useful as well as a range of other feasible and promising uses of this outstanding technology, not only in the already known applications in Obstetrics and Gynecology, but also in the rest of the medical specialties.

Obstetric Ultrasound is the use of ultrasound scans in pregnancy. Since its introduction in the late 1950’s ultrasonography has become a very useful diagnostic tool in Obstetrics.

Currently used equipments are known as real-time scanners, with which a continous picture of the moving fetus can be depicted on a monitor screen. Very high frequency sound waves of between 3.5 to 7.0 megahertz (i.e. 3.5 to 7 million cycles per second) are generally used for this purpose.

They are emitted from a transducer which is placed in contact with the maternal abdomen, and is moved to "look at" (likened to a light shined from a torch) any particular content of the uterus. Repetitive arrays of ultrasound beams scan the fetus in thin slices and are reflected back onto the same transducer.
